Spirulina

What is spirulina?

Origin and composition

The spirulina has been present on earth since 3.5 billion years. This micro-algae is a member of the cyanobacteria family. Thanks to photosynthesis, cyanobacteria have made the planet's air breathable, enabling it to support life...

It measures between 0.3 and 0.5 mm and owes its blue-green color to the phycocyanin, and chlorophyll it contains. It constitutes a consistent source of nutrients (proteins, iron, trace elements, minerals, vitamins, pigments, etc.).

Spirulina grows best in slightly salty, alkaline water at 35-37°C and is most often found in spiral form, but there are many different varieties.

First found naturally in the lakes near the Equator, in India, Chad, Burma and Mexico, it has been a major food source for centuries. major foodstuff for Andean peoples and certain African tribes.
Today (in the last 50 years or so), it is cultivated by craftsmen and industrialists on every continent.

The different forms of spirulina

Spirulina under the microscope

Fresh Spirulina

Spirulina twigs

Spirulina powder

Spirulina tablets

To observe spirulina spirals, a microscope is essential because it's invisible to the naked eye... in fact, it measures around 300 microns.

When spirulina is removed from its culture water, it is called "spirulina". "biomass. Fresh spirulina is excellent but it does not keep in this form for a long time.

Spirulina twigs are the least processed form of dry spirulina. Once the spirulina has been extruded (forming spaghetti) and dried, it is simply crushed.

There are too many poor-quality powders on the market. We advise you to make your own powder by grinding twigs to guarantee the origin and purity of spirulina.

Spirulina tablets are made from our own twigs. without any excipients. The compression is so gentle that they can practically be crunched. This shape is ideal for people who don't like the taste of spirulina.

How to recognize a good spirulina?

Respect for spirulina and the environment

The production of Spiruline Vibratoire ® under glass allows keep the heat in (ecology) and isolate crops from insects, animals and external pollutants (hygiene).

There are large-scale, open-air spirulina production operations whose sole aim is profitability. These crops cover hundreds of hectares, use up a lot of resources and cannot offer spirulina of the same quality as artisanal production.

Our Life's Producers treat spirulina with love and respect. The Life's Code charter chooses its sites away from areas of atmospheric, electrical, electromagnetic, soil or water pollution.

Quality water for the growing medium

Water is the basis of life... It records everything, it keeps the memory... (Cf. Dr Masaru Emoto's work).

The water quality used to form the culture medium is the most important factor in producing high-quality spirulina.

Life's Producers use a high quality, filtered, pure drinking water, tested by independent laboratories.

The water in the basins is free from any trace of undesirable bacteria or micro-organisms, heavy metals or pesticides.

According to the Life's Code charter, the water in the ponds is energized by vortex effect. This process gives water back all its vitality by mimicking the life of rivers, rainwater or whirlpools.

Transparent analysis

According to the Life's Code charter, several times a day, basin parameters are monitored (pH, water and air temperature, concentration, brightness, etc.).

Spirulina is examined under a microscope and compositional analyses are carried out.

For each batch of finished product we carry out bacteriological analysis.

The presence of heavy metals and pesticides is also frequently found in culture media and on finished products.

Each analysis report appears on the website in full transparency.

Low drying temperature

According to the Life's Code charter, spirulina is dried low-temperature (around 37°C) to preserve all their virtues, the twigs are composed of 100% spirulina and contain no preservatives, colorants or other additives.

Reasoned cultivation

After daily analysis of its culture medium, spirulina does not receive than what it needs to grow.

We take care not to "overfeed" spirulina in order to preserve the quality of its culture medium and avoid the development of undesirable micro-organisms.

This requires a great deal of control over its needs and development.

Is organic spirulina of better quality?

Organic spirulina: a saturated market, but where does the real quality lie?

The organic spirulina has been booming in France over the past few years, driven by growing demand for healthy, organic food. But did you know that majority of organic spirulina you find on the market come from... on the other side of the planet ? Yes, most of them come from countries such as India or China.

Faced with the domination of industrial spirulina from Asia, French producers have decided to set themselves apart. Since 2010the Spiruliniers de France collaborate with FNAB (National Federation of Organic Agriculture) to include spirulina in the european organic regulation. At 2015specifications specific to organic spirulina has been filed with theINAO (Institut National de l'Origine et de la Qualité).

But then, in 2017one major obstacle stands in the way: the European Union classifies spirulina as a "marine algae".. However, it is a cyanobacteria that live in brackish waterfar from the criteria of a seaweed. As a result, the european organic regulation proved unsuitable for spirulina production.

Meanwhile, the industrial spirulinaproduced at low cost on the other side of the world, benefits from the biological label thanks to loose equivalence agreements between foreign and European labels. This allows spirulina, often heated to 250°C and grown under dubious conditions, d'invade the French market.

Today, the FSF believes that european regulation requirements are incompatible with quality spirulina production in Europe. Indeed, for respect these rulesit would be necessary import plant-based nitrogen solutions from Latin Americawhich seems totally disconnected from organic values in its purest sense. Is this really what we expect from an organic product? The answer is no.

This is why we have decided to forego official certification. We believe thatresponsible production, respectful of the environment, living beings and consumersbased on the biomimicry and ethical awarenessis far more virtuous than the compromises imposed by current labels.

We stand for pure, local, high-quality spirulina that truly respects its fundamental values.

In short, spirulina is a powerful natural supplement that helps older people achieve greater overall well-being.

Is Vibratory Spirulina® a good source of vitamin B12?

The spirulina contains methylcobalaminan active form of vitamin B12but also non-active analogues called pseudo-vitamin B12. These analogues, although harmless, are not biologically active in humans and may interfere with the results of vitamin B12 deficiency tests.

The question of bioavailability of the vitamin B12 in spirulina remains a subject under discussion. Although spirulina contains vitamin B12 analogues, these are not biologically active to meet human needs, unlike the active form of this vitamin found in animal products. Few studies have been carried out on this subject in humans, and those available are often biased.

Results vary depending on many factors, including the production method spirulina. For example, the drying method plays a crucial role: when spirulina is exposed to extreme high temperaturesa large part of its vitamins, including vitamin B12, becomes inactive. What's more, the studies do not always specify these drying conditions or the health and dietary habits of the participants, which further complicates interpretation of the results.

So, while spirulina is an excellent source of many nutrientshis effectiveness as a source of active vitamin B12 for humans remains uncertain and request a more in-depth analysis.

Recommendations for vegetarians and vegans

  • Do not rely exclusively on spirulina as a source of vitamin B12:
    • Vegetarians and vegans should choose reliable sources, such as :
      • Specific vitamin B12 dietary supplements.
      • Fortified foods (plant milks, cereals, fortified nutritional yeasts).
      • This guarantees a supply of bioactive vitamin B12 adapted to human needs.
  • Monitoring and prevention :
    • People following a vegan or vegetarian diet should have regular check-ups to monitor their vitamin B12 levels.
    • If a deficiency is detected, a healthcare professional can recommend a suitable supplement.

Although spirulina is a nutrient-rich superfood, it is not a reliable source of vitamin B12 for humans. To prevent deficiencies, a complementary approach with specific supplements or fortified foods is strongly recommended.

What are the main nutrients in Spirulina Vibratoire®?

Spirulina is a nutritional goldmine thanks to its many beneficial components:

  • Vitamins : rich in essential vitamins such as vitamin B12, vitamin A (in the form of beta-carotene), vitamin K, and certain B-group vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B6).
  • Minerals : contains important minerals such as iron, magnesium, potassium, calcium and zinc. The iron contained in spirulina is particularly bioavailable, which is beneficial for iron-deficient people.
  • Pigments : Chlorophyll, phycocyanin, beta-carotene and other pigments.
  • Enzymes to aid digestion.
  • Fatty acids : oleic and linoleic acids.
Can Spirulina Vibratoire® be heated?

Heating spirulina is generally not recommended, as it can lead to a significant loss of its valuable nutrients and functional properties. Here's a detailed explanation of why it's best to consume spirulina without subjecting it to high temperatures:

  • Loss of heat-sensitive vitamins

Spirulina is packed with essential vitamins, notably vitamin B12 and vitamin C, which are particularly sensitive to heat. Overcooking can drastically reduce their concentration, diminishing the overall nutritional value.

  • Decrease in antioxidants

Rich in antioxidants, spirulina helps combat oxidative stress. However, exposure to high temperatures can alter these compounds and reduce their effectiveness.

  • Protein alteration

Spirulina is an excellent source of complete proteins. However, proteins can become denatured when exposed to heat, altering their structure and reducing their ability to supply the body with the amino acids it needs.

  • Enzyme inactivation

Among its benefits, spirulina contains enzymes beneficial to digestion and general health. Heat tends to destroy these enzymes, diminishing their positive impact.

  • Reduced nutrient bioavailability

Heating can also compromise the bioavailability of nutrients, i.e. their absorption and utilization by the body.

Our recommendations for optimal consumption

  • Add spirulina after cooking: If you're preparing a hot dish, add spirulina at the very end, once the preparation has cooled slightly, to limit its exposure to heat.
  • Prefer raw consumption: To retain all its benefits, consume spirulina in smoothies, juices or by adding it to cold dishes such as salads or yoghurts.

In a nutshell

To take full advantage of the vitamins, antioxidants, proteins and enzymes it offers, it's essential to avoid heating spirulina. By incorporating spirulina into your diet raw or minimizing exposure to heat, you can maximize its health benefits.

Can Vibratory Spirulina® be combined with vitamin C?

Absolutely! Combining spirulina with vitamin C is not only possible, it's a winning combination for optimizing your well-being. Here's why:

  • Better iron absorption: Spirulina is naturally rich in iron, an essential mineral, but iron of plant origin (non-haem iron) is often poorly absorbed by the body. Vitamin C improves this absorption by transforming non-haem iron into a form much more easily assimilated by the body.

  • Enhanced antioxidant synergy: Spirulina is packed with antioxidants, and vitamin C is another powerful protector against free radicals. Together, these two allies boost your protection against cellular damage, strengthening your immune system and overall health.

  • Energy boost and better recovery: Spirulina, rich in protein, essential amino acids, iron and vitamin B12, combined with vitamin C, supports your daily energy and facilitates recovery after exercise. Ideal for those involved in physical activity or looking to regain their vitality.

Practical tips

  • To take full advantage of this synergy, we recommend taking your spirulina with a natural source of vitamin C, such as fresh fruit, or with a liposomal vitamin C supplement, like the one we offer.

In short, combining spirulina and vitamin C is an excellent idea for boosting your energy and making the most of their complementary properties. Don't hesitate to adopt this routine for maximum benefits!
