WHAT IS ASTAXANTHIN?
It's a dark red molecule derived from a marine microalga: Haematococcus pluvialis. It dyes the flesh of the animals that eat it.
Astaxanthin, a member of the carotenoid family, is a pigment reputed to give flamingos, shrimps and salmon their pink/red color.
On contact with heat, the protein around it is released, which is why crustaceans change color when immersed in boiling water.
Did you know that it is this same Astaxanthin that provides wild salmon with the colossal energy they need to swim up rivers and return to their birthplace in order to reproduce?
Astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant which acts on the skin and retina against sun damage. It penetrates, diffuses and stores easily in the cell membranes of all body tissues.
It is one of the only antioxidants that can cross the blood-brain barrier (action on cognitive and cerebral functions) and the blood-retina barrier (action on eyesight). All organs are receptive to astaxanthin.
There is synthetic Astaxanthin, entirely manufactured chemically, but its value is far inferior to that of the natural pigment.
